Underscoring the importance of acquiring new age skills in the Police Department, the city’s Police Commissioner, Mr Ravishankar Ayyanar, IPS has said that the nature of crimes today had changed significantly and that technology backed crimes are zooming in numbers.

Addressing APSSDC’s skilling conclave in the city the Police Commissioner apprised of the dearth of skills in the Police Department in dealing with cybercrimes and said due to sophisticated nature of cybercrimes it was becoming seemingly difficult in arresting the wrong doers.

‘Cybercrimes, cyber terrorism, cyber security breaches are just some of the new age perils that we at the Police Department have to deal with. Just in Vizag alone there are an average 5000 cybercrimes FIRs reported in a year. And out of these only 1000 or so can be effectively dealt with’ said the city’s Police Commissioner.

He therefore advocated an urgent need for up skilling in new age technologies for the Police Department so that the law enforcers are better equipped to deal with it.

Mr Ravi Shankar also highlighted the need to enhance soft skills (communication) in police personnel so that they are more discerning while dealing with the public at large.

‘Due to the enormity and variety of complaints that our police personnel have to deal with there is a huge scope in enhancing our department’s communication skills too’ said the city’s top cop.

Mr Ravi Shankar also opined of the 4As in making skill training and development successful.

‘In order to provide for effective skill training it needs to have the 4As i.e. it first needs to be Available then Accessible followed by Affordable and then accountable’ opined the CP.
