Andhra Pradesh, often known as the “Egg Basket of India,” is rapidly emerging as a significant player in the global market for eggs and egg powder.
The state’s booming poultry industry and strategic initiatives are setting the stage for substantial growth in exports.
As per industry estimates Andhra Pradesh produces over 5 crore eggs per day, accounting for nearly 20% of India’s total output.
This prolific production has positioned the state as a key supplier in both domestic and international markets.
The global demand for egg powder, a versatile product widely used in the food industry, is on the rise, and Andhra Pradesh is seizing this opportunity to expand its market reach.
‘The state has a huge potential for export to countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, etc. Presently, majority of the exports happen from Namakkal, Tamil Nadu’ stated Mr Suresh Chitturi, MD Srinivasa Farms speaking to Vizag Industrial Scan.
He further added that Andhra Pradesh is well-equipped to meet international quality standards and with support from the government, it can become a million-dollar valuation industry.
‘All that we need to do is to set the quality standards before the export of products’ noted Mr Chitturi. Industry stakeholders also pointed out that in countries like Malaysia where the government provides subsidies, the production cost in AP is cheaper by Rs 2.5- 3 per egg compared to the local production abroad.
For instance, the cost per egg in Malaysia is Rs 9 and the government gives Rs 1.8 as subsidy. In other countries, the cost per egg also goes up to Rs 10-12 while the cost per egg in India is Rs 5.75- 6 including the packing charges.
A few months ago, there was a shortage in the production of eggs in Malaysia due to the increase in the feed cost. And that is when it was exported from India due to shortage in supply.
Hence, Andhra Pradesh can be one of the exporters of eggs and egg powder. Strategic location is another advantage for Andhra Pradesh apart from being one of the cheapest producers.
Its proximity to major ports like Visakhapatnam and Kakinada enables efficient export logistics, facilitating the state’s expanding trade relationships with countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.Mr Uday Bhaskar, NECC Zonal Chairman Vizag, said, “Egg powder is usually exported to Japan and now there is an increase in the demand.
There are 4-5 egg powder processing plants that will be coming up in the South including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka.”
He also stated that Japanese companies are forming tie-ups with poultry groups for production of egg powder and layer poultry farming in India. The logistics cost of exporting eggs to other countries will also not be very high hence it can be cost-effective.
With its robust production capacity, strategic initiatives, and expanding global partnerships, Andhra Pradesh is poised to become a leading exporter of eggs and egg powder, contributing significantly to India’s economy and global food security.
