AP marks 55% growth in patent filings

Stands 9th in the country with 1445 Patent Filings

In the recently released IP filings by the Indian Patent Office Government of India the state of Andhra Pradesh came out with flying colours.

Analysing the report DPIIT-IPR Chair Andhra University Visakhapatnam, Prof Hanumanthu Purushotham informed that as per the report total patents filed in India by both residents and non-residents were 82,811.

Andhra Pradesh he said had filed an impressive 1445 patents for the fiscal FY23 wherein this was the first time it crossed the 1000 patent filing mark. The state had filed 934 patents in FY 22. ‘We have thus registered a significant growth rate of about 55%’ said Prof Purushotham, speaking to Vizag Industrial Scan.

The professor further informed that AP had done well even racing ahead of Telangana in terms of growth rate and had achieved ninth rank in India compared to 10th rank last year in patent filings.

The top five Indian States were Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Punjab with 7686, 5626, 5564, 5408 and 3405 patent filings respectively.

Prof Purushotham lauded the untiring efforts and leadership of Andhra University’s Vice Chancellor Prof PVGD Prasad Reddy for the role played by AU as State IPR Nodal Agency in enhancing the IPR awareness and patent filings.

Prof PVGD Prasad Reddy expressed his happiness, appreciated the efforts and initiatives of DPIIT-IPR Chair and said AU as a State IPR Nodal Agency played a catalytic role in creating IPR Awareness and increased patent filings in the State. 

He further said that the AP State Council for Higher Education may direct all the Higher Educational Institutes in AP to adopt the model IPR policy brought out and being implemented effectively by Andhra University to enhance the growth of patent filings from AP.
