Moots IPR exchange Portal- An E-marketplace for IPRs

The National Research Development Corporation, popularly known as NRDC has in the past year or so been making notable strides in reaching out to a larger academic and MSME community and forging much needed partnerships.

Mandated to promote, develop and commercialise technologies know-how, inventions, patents, processes emanating from various national R&D institutions, Universities, NRDC was established in 1953 by the Government of India, under the administrative control of the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology.

It has over the past many years licensed indigenous technologies to more than 5000 entrepreneurs and helped to establish a large number of small and medium scale industries.

However this coveted organization has largely remained a Delhi centric body. Identifying this as a major challenge and an impediment in spreading awareness on the importance of IPRs and the vast number of technologies NRDC possesses, the organization under the leadership of its current CMD Cmde Amit Rastogi, IN, (Retd.) is swiftly expanding its footprint.

‘We are on an upswing. In the last 1 year alone NRDC has expanded briskly. In addition to expanding our Delhi incubation centre we have opened 2 outreach centres one in Pune to cater to the western region and one in Guwahati to cater to the north East. An additional 2 more incubation centres are slated to come up’ informed Cmde Rastogi speaking exclusively to Vizag Industrial Scan.

NRDC already has an outreach centre in Vizag in Andhra Pradesh which was established a few years ago and has been aggressively providing its services to the mid-eastern region here.

Explaining the need for a larger presence of NRDC across the country, Cmde Rastogi said that it’s important for NRDC to be co-located with as many institutes as possible so as to help them in their respective research.

IP Exchange Portal

NRDC also intends to establish an IPR exchange portal on PPP mode which Cmde Rastogi says will be a global online platform rather an e-marketplace for trading of IPRs worldwide.

‘The platform will enable the universities/academia/R&D institutions to illustrate their technologies along with their IPs and facilitate in generating global business opportunities’ said the CMD.

And apart from trading IPRs, the portal shall offer add-on services related to IPR like consultancy services for IP valuation, IP portfolio management.

Moulding Partnerships Abroad

The organization is not just limiting itself within the country but is moulding partnerships abroad wherein it can both derive and add value.

‘We have signed MoUs with USPTO and AARDO’ cited the NRDC chief.

Elaborating on the MoUs he explained that the MoU with AARDO (African Asian Rural Development Organisation) will help take rural technologies from India and put them to work in African countries while the MoU with USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) will primarily assist in capacity building and IPR awareness programs here.
