Defence Public Sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence (Defence Production), Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has undertaken a major initiative to promote an e-vessel ecosystem in the country in order to mark a transformative leap towards greener footprints in Maritime sector.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) had announced a vision on likely conversion of atleast 50% of tugs into Green Tugs by 2030 under “Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP)” with the aim of making India a ‘Global Hub for Green Ship’ by 2030.

‘HSL aims at developing a thriving E-Vessels ecosystem in India well before that, by developing the ability to build e-tugs and to achieve autonomy in designing and building e-Tugs by 2026.

This in line with PM’s vision on a sustainable maritime sector and vibrant blue economy’ said HSL in a press statement.

And in order to achieve “Sampoorna Atmanirbharatha” in e-vessels, HSL is collaborating with various R&D, Industry and academic Institutions for phased development of various major systems of e-vessels, namely Energy Management System, Energy Storage System with Battery Management System, High Power Electronics, High Efficiency Axial Flux Motors and Propulsion Control Systems etc. and playing a lead role as an integrator of their collective efforts.

In addition, with a view to build a vibrant ancillary ecosystem centered around Visakhapatnam, HSL is planning to include a few promising industries based in Visakhapatnam and costal districts to participate in the program, get exposure to new technologies and be part of a thriving ancillary system.

HSL inks MOU

HSL has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Shift Clean Solutions Company that is engaged in the design and manufacturing of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and Battery Management Systems (BMS) based on Lithium Energy Technology.

As per HSL the MoU allows the two companies to jointly explore and establish a path for the future supply and integration of Energy Storage System (ESS) to provide cost effective e – Tugs solutions to the customer.

This collaboration anticipates for development of e – Tugs ecosystem in the country offering range of benefits.

It was further stated that the company is also now focusing onto the development of a family of Green Tugs with bollard pull capacity ranging from 40T to 80 T using modular concept to enable standardization, commonality, interchangeability and reducing life cycle cost.
