Holds stakeholders Meeting

The Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited (APADCL) recently organized a high-level stakeholders consultation meeting focused on enhancing air cargo capabilities in the state, particularly in the Vijayawada region.

The event witnessed participation across the sectors and representatives from logistics, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and airlines like SpiceJet, Indigo, and Air India.

Mr. Praveen Adhithya, IAS, Managing Director of APADCL, emphasized Andhra Pradesh’s potential to become a global air cargo hub.

With India’s goal of handling 10 million metric tonnes of cargo by 2030, the state’s strong production of perishable goods and strategic airports position it for growth. Investments in cold storage, warehousing, and terminals can drive economic prosperity and make Andhra Pradesh a key player in air logistics.

Leading bureaucrats of the state highlighted some of the key points in furthering the growth of Air cargo in this region.

Mr. S Suresh Kumar, IAS, Secretary to Government, Infrastructure & Investment, Government of Andhra Pradesh – Highlighted establishing infrastructure to support air cargo operations is crucial, particularly in industrial corridors and port-led development areas.

Mr. Babu A, IAS, Secretary to Government (Horticulture, Aquaculture and Fisheries) – Stressed the vital importance of exporting perishable goods and highlighted the need for establishing dedicated air cargo and fishery hubs in Andhra Pradesh, utilizing a cluster-based approach to enhance efficiency, boost exports, and drive sustainable growth in the sector.

Dr. N Yuvaraj, IAS, Secretary, I&C – Highlighted that there is a strong need for more flights from Vijayawada to major cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai, to enable direct cargo shipments to industrial hubs, improving efficiency and boosting economic growth.

Mr. Ajay Kumar, CEO – AAI Cargo Logistics and Allied Services Company Limited – Outlined the existing air cargo facilities currently in place, while emphasizing the need for new, specialized infrastructure to support key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, fisheries, and aquaculture.

Similarly several stakeholders from the EXIM Trade and Industry also pointed out various challenges and concerns during the meeting.

They highlighted that cargo such as mangoes and seafood are being exported via airports in Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad due to the absence of sufficient direct connectivity from Vijayawada and the higher associated costs.

Chairman of Sky Bird Aviation Pvt. Ltd. introduced the concept of using feeder aircraft with a 3-metric tonne capacity, which could significantly boost local cargo capabilities.

Stakeholders further stressed that direct international connectivity from Vijayawada could reduce the logistics time by 6 to 10 hours—crucial for perishable goods like fruits and seafood.
