Vizag & E Godavari in top 25
NITI Aayog recently released the third edition of its report titled ‘Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2022’ for States/UTs of India.
The Export Preparedness Index 2022 report was released by Mr Suman Bery, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog which evaluated the performance of the states across four pillars i.e. Policy, Business Ecosystem, Export Ecosystem, and Export Performance.
The index also uses 56 indicators which it says holistically captures the export preparedness of States and UTs in terms of exports at both the state and district-level.
In the report NITI Aayog listed the top 10 states in India, in absolute export numbers which included Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Haryana, West Bengal, and Telangana. These states accounted for over 85 % of India’s total exports in 2021-22.
Out of the 680 districts which engage in exports, the top hundred districts contribute around 87 percent of the total exports from India.
Andhra Pradesh
The state of Andhra Pradesh got an overall rank of 8 with a score of 59.27 while Tamil Nadu came in at the top with a score of 80.89 followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat.
Similarly in the coastal category rankings AP came in at 5 with Tamil Nadu yet again being at the top followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat.
As per the report the state of Andhra Pradesh in FY22, recorded an export value of over US$ 19 Billion by exporting products such as Floats, Seafood, and Iron products.
‘The state has achieved this by creating a solid policy framework which enables export at the district level.
In terms of export ecosystem, the state has the highest area under Export Promotion Zones, and Agri-export zones which provides a huge boost to its exports’ noted the report.
AP’s 4 Pillars
In the four pillar wise rankings i.e. Policy Pillar AP was ranked 4 with a score of 99.52 while in the Business Ecosystem pillar it came in at 13 with a score of 47.8, in the export ecosystem pillar it got a rank of 6 with a score of 55.87 and in the export performance pillar it came in at 10 with a score of 41.10.
In terms of export concentration in India’s top 25 districts Vizag and E Godavari districts were ranked 15th and 24th respectively.
As per the report Visakhapatnam garnered a total export share of 1.403% with the top export product being engineering goods while the district of East Godavari had a total exports share of 0.974%.
