Over 70,000 young graduates’ register for PMIS

Andhra Pradesh’s young graduates seem to have taken a strong liking to the Prime Minister’s internship scheme initiative.

Launched on October 3, 2024, the PM Internship Scheme is a Government of India initiative aimed at enhancing youth employability through practical, on-the-job experience.

The initiative is designed to provide interns with hands-on experience in their chosen fields, equipping them with essential skills and industry insights to build successful careers, particularly in the public sector.

The scheme targets 1 crore (10 million) young individuals over five years, offering internships in collaboration with over 500 reputed companies across sectors such as automobiles, finance, manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals.

The state of Andhra Pradesh emerged as the national leader in creating awareness and registering candidates under the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS), with an impressive 70,241 registra- tions.

Odisha with 45,990 registrations comes in at a distant second place.  “An estimated 70,219 candidates have successfully uploaded their profiles on the PM Internship portal, making them eligible for consideration” said Andhra Pradesh state skill development corporation’s (APSSDC) MD & CEO, Mr G. Ganesh Kumar, IAS speaking to Vizag Industrial Scan.

Collectively, these applicants have submitted 75,206 applications, indicating that many students are applying to multiple roles to maximize their chances.

Out of these, 33,854 candidates have actively applied for one or more internship opportunities.

Low on Placements Though

However, the actual number of internships granted to graduates in Andhra Pradesh comes in at just 4,715 internship opportunities, which many opine needs to be on the higher side, keeping in mind the zooming registrations from the state.

“It’s a voluntary scheme and industry-driven for the 500 companies involved; it depends on the company’s requirements, and the opportunities may change in the future in favour of the state, “explain sources from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

It was further informed that in the first round (Phase-1), 1,361 candidates accepted their internship offers. The APSSDC assures that follow-up efforts are underway to encourage the remaining selected candidates to confirm their participation and complete the on boarding process.

So far, 51 candidates are currently pursuing their internships. More students are expected to join in the coming weeks, based on the joining dates provided by the respective companies.

Companies Hiring

The PM Internship Scheme has attracted participation from a wide range of industries and companies.

A total of 72 companies across 17 sectors are currently recruiting interns.

In the state of Andhra Pradesh, internship opportunities are being offered in four prominent sectors: Agriculture and Allied, Electronics, Automobiles, and Pharmaceuticals.

These opportunities are available with top reputable companies such as Avanti Feeds Limited, Amara Raja Energy and Mobility Limited, and Laurus Labs Limited. Furthermore, aspirants from Andhra Pradesh have applied for internship opportunities across all 17 sectors, including: Oil and Gas, Banking and Finance, IT and ITES, Travel and Hospitality, Manufacturing and Engineering.
