The chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr N Chandrababu Naidu along with the deputy chief Minister Mr Pawan Kalyan, today laid the foundation stone for one of the world’s largest green hydrogen based green ammonia projects in Kakinada in the presence of BJP state president Mr PVN Madhav, CEO & MD, Greenko group Mr Anil Chalamalasetty, Director, AM Green, Mr Pydah Maurya and many other distinguished dignitaries.
The occasion marked the First Major Equipment Erection Ceremony of AM Green’s Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Complex at Kakinada.
With a total projected investment of USD 10 billion, the AM Green project represents one of the largest clean-energy investments ever made in India.
As per the government the project is estimated to generate up to 8,000 jobs during the construction phase, besides creating large-scale, high-skill employment during operations and across allied industries such as renewables, logistics, storage, and port services.
About the Project
AM Green is setting up the plant with an initial investment of Rs 13,000 crore across 495 acres with a planned capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
The project is being developed through the brownfield conversion of an existing ammonia-urea complex, representing one of the country’s most significant industrial revival stories.
The existing grey ammonia plant of Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited is being redeveloped into a green ammonia plant through a brown field conversion.
For the first time in India’s history, green energy molecules produced domestically will be exported to global markets, including Germany, Japan, and Singapore, firmly positioning India—and Andhra Pradesh—as a clean-energy exporter on the world stage .
Unlike grey and blue ammonia produced using coal, oil, and natural gas, this green ammonia is completely environment-friendly with no carbon emissions, said a release from the government.
The project will be commissioned in phases:
- 0.5 MTPA by 2027
- 1.0 MTPA by 2028
- 1.5 MTPA by 2030
Global Export Linkages
It was further informed that AM Green has already entered into long-term supply agreements with leading global players, including Uniper (Germany), and is engaged with major companies in Japan and Singapore, making this the first instance of green energy exports from India to Europe and advanced Asian markets.
Green ammonia from Kakinada will be used globally for clean shipping fuel, power generation, and as a pathway to green hydrogen, supporting international decarbonisation goals.
AP’s ICE Policy
Aligned with the Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2024, this project cements Andhra Pradesh’s leadership in India’s clean-energy transition and establishes the state as the country’s primary hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia.
“This project is not just an industrial investment—it is a statement of intent. Andhra Pradesh is leading India into the era of clean-energy exports and global climate leadership,” the government stated.
