To invest Rs 1500 crores in 2 phases
Giving a major boost to the government’s digital initiatives, Sify Infinit Spaces Limited, a subsidiary of Nasdaq listed Sify Technologies, today laid the foundation stone for Visakhapatnam’s first 50MW AI-powered Edge Data Center and Open Cable Landing Station (CLS).
Marking the importance of this crucial and mega project Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for IT, Electronics and Communications, Real Time Governance and Human Resources Development, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Mr Nara Lokesh, especially flew down to the port city to lay the foundation stone.
Sify officials informed that it will deploy the AI Edge Data Center, on a 3.6 acre of land allocated by the State Government, to support AI-driven enterprises and digital infrastructure.
This Edge Data Center will be interconnected via the OPGW substation and will be connected by at least two fiber networks.
The investment will be to the tune of approximately Rs 1500 crores in two phases.
The facility will engage a little more than 1000 people during the construction and operational phases with resources drawn from a mix of technical and locally trained resources.
“Visakhapatnam is fast emerging as India’s global digital gateway on the eastern seaboard. Sify’s world-class infrastructure will not only strengthen our state’s position in the global technology map but also catalyze new opportunities in innovation, employment, and investment.
This is just the first step with approvals for a mega data center already in place. This marks a defining moment in Andhra Pradesh’s digital journey and India’s path toward technological self-reliance,” said Mr Nara Lokesh, Minister for IT, Electronics and Communications, Government of Andhra Pradesh.
It was also informed that the new CLS facility will strengthen India’s digital backbone by enabling seamless undersea cable connectivity and scalable AI compute capacity at the edge.
By bringing low-latency data processing closer to users in India and across the region, the CLS Vizag will serve as a strategic landing point for submarine cables connecting India with Southeast Asia—including Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and Thailand.
“We are proud to enable Visakhapatnam’s transformation into a key hub for global connectivity and digital infrastructure. This initiative is just the beginning of our long-term commitment to strengthening India’s digital economy and advancing AI-led innovation at scale,” said Mr Raju Vegesna, Chairman, Sify.
Speaking on the importance of this project both for Vizag and Andhra Pradesh, SIFY’s Mr Harsha Ram noted that submarine cables play an important role in communication between countries and that historically in India these cables have come to Mumbai and Chennai.
The first submarine cable came to India in 1870 highlighted Mr Harsha and added that since then about 35 cables have come to India but most of them went to Mumbai and Chennai.
“However today we are breaking from the norm and coming to Vizag in Andhra Pradesh. This project will elevate Vizag into an important global destination for all traffic coming into India” said Mr Harsha.
He credited the government of Andhra Pradesh and Minister Lokesh’s speed of doing business and for having a strong and comprehensive vision around digital infrastructure in the state and for making them come to AP.
“The state government and the bureaucracy has been very supportive of our endeavour” said SIFY’s Mr Harsha.
BJP State president, Mr PVN Madhav along with Mr Vishnu Kumar Raju, APIIC chairman, Mr Mantena Rama Raju, AP’s IT secretary, Mr Bhaskar Katamneni, IAS, Vizag district collector, Mr M.N. Harendhira Prasad, Mr Ganta Raviteja and other senior dignitaries participated in the program.
