Japan’s Toshiba looks to deepen engagement with HSL for battery Tech

Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Vizag, recently hosted a high-level delegation from Toshiba’s Battery Division, Japan.

This visit as per HSL was part of a strategic initiative to explore advanced energy storage solutions tailored for the maritime sector.

The delegation, led by Mr Sato Goro-san, Group Head of Battery Sales and Business Development at Toshiba Japan, Mr Kazutaka Nishimura-san, Director of Toshiba India, and Mr. Rakesh Trakru, Sales Incharge of Toshiba India, was accompanied by Mr. Maninder Singh of the LWT Group.

Welcoming the delegation HSL’s Director Cmde Girdeep Singh, outlined HSL’s strategic vision and emphasized the shipyard’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies that align with India’s “Make in India” initiative.

Discussions centered on integrating Toshiba’s state-of-the-art Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO) battery technology, known for its exceptional safety, reliability, and adaptability to demanding marine environments.

The potential business association between HSL, Toshiba, and LWT envisions the development of advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with complete rack integration tailored for India’s maritime needs.

Speaking on the occasion, Sato Goro-san remarked, “Collaborating with one of India’s most prestigious shipyards is a tremendous opportunity to bring Toshiba’s cutting-edge energy solutions to the Indian maritime sector.

We are excited about the prospects of contributing to sustainability and innovation in shipbuilding.”

Echoing similar sentiment, Cmde Girdeep Singh, Director, said, “We are thrilled to explore Toshiba’s advanced LTO cell technology and, in collaboration with our partner LWT, using Toshiba cells, aim to manufacture complete Battery Energy Storage Systems right here in India.

This initiative aligns perfectly with our vision under the ‘Make in India’ program, driving self-reliance while delivering world-class solutions.

This initiative marks a pivotal step toward enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability in India’s shipbuilding industry, reinforcing HSL’s position as a pioneer in adopting cutting-edge technologies for the next generation of maritime operations.
