The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) had recently initiated a major operation to remove sunken fishing trawlers and boats lying at various jetties in the Fishing Harbour. Launched on September 11, this project is part of VPA’s upgradation and Modernization of the Fishing Harbour.

A total of 6 fishing trawlers and 11 boats that were submerged in the seabed at various jetties were identified. These sunken vessels as per VPA have hindered fishing activities disrupted navigational safety and obstructed access to the jetties.

The removal process involves complex underwater operations, including videography, the use of specialized underwater cutters, and desilting the debris with high-capacity generators and compressors. Skilled divers have been deployed to carefully execute the task, prioritizing safety and security at all times.

The entire project, which is scheduled for completion by December 2024, is being undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs.1.20 crore, stated a release.
