IIPE Vizag holds workshop on H2 & decarbonisation

The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE), Visakha- patnam, in collaboration with Stony Brook University, New York recently organised a 3-day Indo-US Workshop on Hydrogen and Global Decarbonization.

The three-day workshop included comprehensive sessions on climate change, fossil fuels and decarbonization strategies using potential carbon-less alternatives, with special emphasis on the hydrogen value chain.

The event had notable speakers, including experts from academia, industry, and policymakers. Prof. Devinder Mahajan from Stony Brook University, a leading expert in clean fuel production technologies and decarbonization, emphasized the importance of goal-oriented research and commended the NTPC-IIPE collaboration for its innovative hydrogen production initiatives.

Mr S.K. Sinha, Project Director, NTPC Simhadri, the guest of honour for the event, discussed the usage of seawater for condenser cooling and the installation of a 25 MW floating solar panel, forecasting NTPC to become a 130 GW company by 2032.

Mr U.K. Bhattacharya, Director of NTPC Projects, graced the event as the chief guest and highlighted the recent commissioning of a 1 TPD hydrogen plant and the potential of chemical and electrochemical engineering in addressing global energy challenges.

The workshop underscored the crucial role of industry-academia partnerships in advancing hydrogen technology and achieving global energy targets.

Prof. Shalivahan, Director IIPE said that the forum was specifically designed for industry executives in the energy sector to discuss and exchange ideas on hydrogen as a crucial element in global decarbonization efforts. 

He informed that the Indo-US Workshop on Hydrogen and Global Decarbonization is a landmark event in making Visakhapatnam a green hydrogen hub in pursuit of a sustainable future.

The final day of the workshop explored the decarbonization pathways for hydrogen adoption in key industrial sectors, emphasizing techno-economic and life cycle analyses and the potential for regional demonstration projects.

Prof. Krishnasri V. Kurada, Convenor of the event from IIPE Visakhapatnam provided insights into the storage and transportation of Hydrogen while Mr Ramphal Dwivedi, Registrar congratulated the organizers and participants for making it a grand success.
